Former Dolphins running back and distinguished cannabis user, Ricky Williams, is set to manage a pot-friendly gym in San Fransico. The gym, which is to be called Power Plant Fitness and is set to open in November, will be a place where clients who are keen on keeping fit can also vape and consume marijuana edibles on the premises, even whilst working out.

The former NFL star – who was suspended multiple times throughout his career for testing positive for marijuana – has teamed up with Jim McAlpine (the founder of 420 Games) to make a concerted effort to push back against the stigmatization of using cannabis for health purposes. In particular, the duo hopes to show how the use of marijuana can improve a person’s recovery after a strenuous workout and how it can aid rehabilitation after sports-related injuries. McAlpine also hopes that by opening Power Plant Fitness, he and Williams can highlight how weed naturally aids athletic performance.

McAlpine isn’t the only advocate for exercising under the influence. For years, hardcore athletes including NFL players, UFC fighters, triathletes, and Olympians have been using marijuana to help them face hours of grueling training sessions. By vaporizing cannabis before, during (yes, even during) and after working out, athletes gain focus, discipline, confidence and benefit from better pain regulation and improved muscle recovery afterward. This neurological system helps a person maintain a healthy mind and strong body and is responsible for easing pain, controlling appetite, relieving stress, influencing mood and even regulating memory. McAlpine revealed that Power Plant Fitness will give every client who wants one an initial, personalized “cannabis performance assessment.” The aim is to discern how consuming marijuana can positively influence their individual workout. It should also, hopefully, destroy the idea that the typical weed frequenter is nothing more than a lazy beatnik.
