How Exactly is Vaping Different than Smoking?
Vaping, short for vaporizing, is when a substance (such as E-Juice, wax, herbs, or oil) is heated up at the perfect temperature in order to create a vapor. There can be two types of vapor: the substance in its gaseous form or a suspension of the liquid particles in the air as they cool after evaporating.
The effect is the same either way: vaporizing the substance like E-Juice/E-Liquids or loose herbs like tobacco, allows for the substance’s molecules to be inhaled directly so they can be absorbed by the lungs. This bypasses the digestive system and allows the substance to go directly into the blood via your lungs.
When a substance is vaped, it hits your brain in around five seconds, similar to smoking.
While the science is similar between vaping and smoking — which is heating a substance to evaporate its molecules so it can be inhaled — the difference is in the details.
Smoking uses combustion to heat and evaporate molecules (such as in traditional cigarettes). Combustion is simply a reaction of oxygen and an oxidizable material (your tobacco product, etc…).
The temperature needed for smoking tends to be high and this means that many harmful compounds can be created in the process — the substances that are smoked tend to be more expensive and more harmful.
Vaping uses a lower temperature to create the vapor that will be inhaled. E-Juices, waxes, and oils created in the vaping industry are created to be chemically stable so that it will evaporate before it reacts with oxygen in the air around it. E-Cigs and vaping juices/waxes/oils take advantage of this effect by dissolving the active compounds into VG and/or PG before heating them (which suspends the substance in what we call E-Liquid/E-Juice).
This process also means that it’s possible to spread the liquid over a larger surface area (such as your wick inside of the atomizer, which means it can be evenly heated, offering better temperature control.
