All You Need To Know About Online Head shops

Helping you feel at ease when buying pot smoking paraphernalia online

Technology, it really is an amazing thing. Who would have thought that there’d ever be a time when we could communicate with, learn from, and buy, sell, or trade with people from all over the world? Some of the team here at Vape.net still get flabbergasted at the concept, and we all feel pretty lucky that we’re here and able to experience the wonders of the Internet.

Unfortunately, every superhero needs an arch nemesis, some evil villain hellbent on making people’s lives misery. And the World Wide Web’s antagonist? Well, it has a few. They’re the fly-by-night companies and fraudsters who create web pages to rob people of their hard earned money by selling low quality, potentially dangerous products under the guise that they’re a professional outfit, and there are the hackers who, if you piss them off, can do complicated computer wizardry to do things like, steal your bank account, change your contact details or instal viruses on your computers. For balance, though, hackers can also do some pretty funny stuff as well. But for the closeted medicinal marijuana user, frugal stoner, or the paranoid pothead, this poses a big issue when considering buying marijuana merchandise online. Even though there are

But for the closeted medicinal marijuana user, frugal stoner, or the paranoid pothead, this poses a big issue when considering buying marijuana merchandise online. Even though there are fantastic money saving deals do be had, how can you tell if the company or head shop you’re buying from is legit? How do you know the products they sell have in them what ingredients they say they do? How do you know if the product you’re interested in buying is genuinely high quality and how do you even know that you’ll actually be sent anything you buy at all? Argh! It’s all too much!

stress-1277561_1920

Luckily, we’ve come up with a handy guide to help all wacky tobacky enthusiasts navigate the murky waters of the Interwebs. So before you buy your next bong, order an oil rig, or consider purchasing any other piece of merchandise which means you can enjoy your marijuana, read on to learn how to spot whether the online head shop you’re browsing is legitimate, how to tell whether they’re selling high-quality products, and which stores grace our Top 5 list of online head shops.

How to tell if an online Head shop is legitimate

At a glance…

1. Check the domain name – Every online store should have an SSL, a Secure Sockets Layer. This means that any information sent between you and the store becomes encrypted so hackers can’t intercept any of the data. To tell whether an online head shop has this, check the beginning of their web address. It should start with https:// and be accompanied by a green padlock somewhere in the address bar.

SSL

2. Now this next point may sound obvious and therefore redundant to mention, but many people still get caught off guard by it, so we’re going to talk about it anyway! The website address should match the content. If you’ve been exploring the Internet for hours perusing online head shops and your index finger has clicked its way through to what looks like the landing page of Smoke Cartel, but the address is www.VapeMob.com or www.SmokeCartelShop.com, then something is clearly a bit off… Now it’s true that many online headshops have affiliate programs whereby other stores or blogs can advertise the headshop’s products and earn a commission for each sale generated from their site. Therefore, it sounds perfectly plausible that the site you’ve found is just mirroring the headshop, not to lure people into a false sense of security, but to make them feel at ease whilst browsing their online catalog. However, this isn’t the case. Most affiliates choose to display banners linking directly back to the online headshop, rather than the store’s products. However, as an affiliate, there are options to display XML feeds of headshop products on their site, but these are typically branded boxes so that visitors know exactly where that product is from. As an affiliate, you can’t just copy a headshop’s entire site.

2. Check how many products are being sold – is there a large variety? If you were to walk into a grocery store but came across an empty shell of a shop with only a few groceries dotted across some otherwise barren shelving, you’d feel rather uncomfortable… You may even start to worry that you’ve missed something very important on the news, like a zombie outbreak. Shops, whether they’re local ones you can visit or the ones found on the Internet, should be filled with a variety of products and most items should not be “Sold Out”. An online head shop that displays more than half of the products as “Not in Stock” should be approached with caution. It could be that there was a massive surge of activity where hundreds of stoners bought everything they could on the same day, at the same time, but, this seems extremely unlikely. Which begs the questions, are they just being lazy about updating their site, which isn’t very good, or did they never have those products in the first place, and they’re just “padding” out how much they actually stock?

3. Look for spelling and grammar mistakes, and check to see if you recognize any of the product descriptions from other online head shops. Many sleek and professional looking websites can be notched up in one day, hence, why so many online head shops have sprung up, seemingly overnight. Now, we don’t want to be, “those guys” who bring up cultural differences, but it has been proven that a lot of online head shop scamming comes from China, and if English isn’t your first language, well, the content never reads well to those whose native language it is. At the same time, if a head shop has been rushed, spelling and grammar mistakes can occur because the authors aren’t really bothered about their content, they’re hoping you just skim read and buy as many fantastically priced products as you can.  Some phony websites tend to lift product descriptions directly from a reputable online shop to make it harder for you to distrust them, so just be wary if you see familiar items and their descriptions, which don’t seem to gel with the rest of the sites content.

4. Check the site for a privacy statement, refund policy, and blog, as well as in-depth information about the company and their products. This information is usually found in the website’s footer and could come under “Terms and Conditions”. Reputable sites will tell you how they protect your personal information and secure your Credit or Debit card data and whether they sell information about their customers on to other companies. This is a disclosure statement and you should consider whether you feel comfortable with a retailer’s policy before buying. Legitimate online head shops always offer a reasonable refund policy and established shops also always have a well-maintained blog.

Herb Tools know how to do it right

An honest company or online head shop has nothing to hide and so should be happy explaining to their customers exactly what’s in their product, how it was made, where it was made, and they should explain their processes for quality control. They should also make it clear that if they are selling products such as e-Juice or marijuana edibles that they are following all up-to-date government FDA guidelines so that customers know their products are safe to consume. If the online head shop you’re looking at doesn’t offer much in the way of product information, or cannot back up their claims that their products are tested personally or have gone through quality control, it’d be best to give it a wide berth and move on to another site.

5. Check the images and the logos. Are they low quality and hazy? If they are, then, consider it a possibility that the images have just been lifted from somewhere else, made bigger or smaller and therefore that’s why they’re looking a bit squiffy. It is true that to keep http requests to a minimum and to increase site performance, online head shops shouldn’t be filled with huge, slow loading, HD-quality images, but there are ways around this without having to impair the quality of the store’s photographs.

badlogos

Oh dear, it looks like King’s Pipe have made these logos on Paint, they’re even fuzzier on their homepage

6. Find out how many social followers the online headshop has. An established online head shop that sells great products and has fantastically knowledgeable and polite staff always have a plethora of followers. If plenty of other customers like what they’re doing, it’s pretty safe to say that you can too, after all, how can so many other ganja lovers be wrong, eh?

7. Check to see if the online head shop you’re browsing has an est. date and contact details. Online head shops which have been operating for more than three years are typically trustworthy, although saying that doesn’t necessarily mean they supply great products that are fantastic value for money. Any reputable business will try to be as transparent as possible explaining to the customer when they were established and what their brand story is, where they’re located and other information such as who they partner with to create their products, if applicable, i.e. working with local hemp farmers. All legitimate companies will provide contact details, in particular, a phone number and e-mail address, and will urge you to get in touch if you have any questions or queries. Some online headshops even have an online chat feature so you can talk to a representative in real time.

contactus

Everybody Does It provides an array of ways for customers to get in touch with them

8. There should be more than one shipping option and more than one payment method. When you’re browsing an online head shop, check to see what types of shipping they offer and how many methods of payment the store accepts. All trustworthy internet smoke shops will accept Credit or Debit card payments which are processed through your bank’s trusted payment gateway system, or with secure gateways like PayPal or WorldPay, which keep your bank account details safe and protected. For the security conscious stoner or private pothead, some online head shops now accept Bitcoin payments, but never, ever use an online headshop that requests Western Union as a form of payment.

payment

Smoke Cartel clearly shows how you can pay and even provides a link to reveal how they keep your data safe

 9. Most legitimate online head shops will have been commended on review sites, featured in magazines or have won awards for their customer service. Take a quick squizz at the home page and see if the online head shop you’re looking at has “been seen on” or “featured in” highly acclaimed third party websites.

asseenon

Smoke Cartel – Who doesn’t feel better about an online headshop when they find out it’s been featured in High Times?

10. Great online head shops that are trustworthy and deliver great service aren’t afraid to showcase genuine customer reviews under their products. Head shops use honest customer reviews to improve their customer service and listen to ways people think their products could be improved. They also help decide whether a product is worth stocking in the future and responding to comments helps to highlight the staff’s knowledge of what they’re actually selling, for example if a customer has a query or thinks their recent purchase has broken, when in fact, they just haven’t read the instruction manual and aren’t doing something correctly. In the case of us as customers, reviews offer us important information to consider when picking out a new vape pen or bong and obviously the more positive reviews a product has, the more you feel reassured that what you’re planning on buying is going to be perfect.

review

BadAss Glass gets it

Tips on spotting whether a product review is fake

  • A real review is typically more moderate in its praise, it’s not screaming “OMG! THIS PRODUCT IS AMAZING AND YOU SHOULD TOTALLY BUY ANOTHER AND ONE FOR ALL YOUR FRIENDS!” or “I AM SO DISAPPOINTED IN THIS PRODUCT BECAUSE IT DOESN’T WORK WELL AND IF I COULD SCORE IT 0 STARS OUT OF 5 I WOULD, BUT I CAN’T, THAT’S WHY I’VE ONLY SCORED IT 1”.
  • Authentic reviews provide specific information about how the item performed rather than “Yeah, it works alright” or “It does the job okay”.
  • Be wary of reviews with formal product names, model numbers, or tech and marketing jargon, most authentic reviews aren’t padded out with these to aid search engine results.
  • Investigate any reviewer by checking the number of their reviews and how often they submit them. It can be a bit fishy if they’ve recently posted several fantastic or negative reviews in a brief span of say, 30 minutes.
  • If the review is very short, it may be a fake. People are hired to affect the overall score of a product by boosting or lowering its “star” rating, but because everyone must write a review as well, fake reviews tend to be very short and poorly written.
  • Check to see if the person’s review was a verified purchase. If they’ve not actually bought the product they’re probably just trying to affect its overall score.

11. If the products sound too good to be true, they probably are. Most high-quality pot smoking products come with their high price tag for a reason; they’re made by craftspeople using high-quality products/ingredients and go through a rigorous quality control. Selling a Grav Labs water pipe or a Storz and Bickel vaporizer for less than half its price is ridiculous, it’s an insult to the great glassblowers and engineers who make them. Therefore, if an online head shop is claiming to sell these products at an amazingly low price, be warned, they probably don’t actually have it to sell rather, it’s just a cheap knock off, or worse, they’ve nothing to actually send you at all.

If you’re still unsure, here’s how you can take a closer look at finding out whether an online head shop is legitimate or not

1. Use a WHOIS to check the website owner’s location and details. Do the city and/or country the online head shop purports to be selling from match the information displayed on their website? If, say, for example, there is a head shop with a .com that’s selling out of America but you find that the website was actually registered in China, well then, it’s best to stay well away.

2. Find out how old the website is. Obviously, there will be many new head shops coming online in 2016, and most of them will sell great products at affordable prices, but an established shop will always receive more business because there’s the idea that because they’ve been around for so long they know what they’re doing, they do it well, people like them, and therefore, they can be trusted. But if you’re browsing an online head shop that says they’ve been in business since 2004, but when you check through a search engine and find out that they’ve only been online a month, it’s safe to say that something dodgy is going on here and the site should be abandoned.

upnsmoke

results

Yep, Up-N-Smoke were established when they say they were. They also have shop fronts which gives them added authority

How to determine the age of a website in four simple steps

  • Go to the Google search engine and type in the website address.
  • On the results, click “Search Tools”.
  • Click the drop down arrow next to the “Any Time” tab and choose “Custom Range” at the bottom of the list.
  • Fill in the dates that you’d like to investigate” and click “Go”.

Hey presto, if the company is as old as they say they are, there’ll be at least one post in the search  results from that year. If not, they’re fibbing!

3. Ring the telephone numbers listed on the website or try to send them an e-mail. If they’ve provided numbers which just leave you listening to dial tones on your phone, or if you get the dreaded Mailer Daemon Failure Notice, they’re probably scammers who don’t really want to talk to you.

4. If you can get in touch with someone, or if the online head shop’s chat is open, quiz the staff on their product knowledge and to see how clued up they are on the Green Goddess. If it sounds like they know what they’re on about, if they can recommend a product to meet your needs without copy and pasting the product info, if they sound passionate about what they’re doing and really want to help you, they’re the real deal.

How to tell if an online product is genuine and really high-quality when you get it

Online shopping comes with its risks because there are a lot of knock off vaporizers, bongs and other paraphernalia floating around the Interwebs, just waiting to be bought by some unsuspecting stoner who thought they were getting a great deal. So how do you tell if you’ve received a forgery or not? And if it isn’t a forgery, how can you tell whether it’s genuinely high-quality or not?

High-quality Glass Water Pipes and Oil Rigs are made from toughened safety glass, like borosilicate glass, so they feel heavy and sturdy. You can grip them without worrying they’re going to collapse and shatter in your hand, and you don’t have to worry about them if you plant them firmly on a table. Poor quality bongs and rigs, and certainly those which are forgeries of well-known brands, feel delicate and don’t have any weight behind them. Other ways to tell whether your bong or rig are poor in quality depends on the smoking experience you get. Is it smooth? Do you get tight seals around the joints? If not, you’ve just bought a low-grade piece of pot-smoking paraphernalia. Forgeries can be detected by their quality, whether their dimensions match the ones listed on the company’s own website, and whether the signature or logo are positioned in the wrong place. Knockoff items tend to reverse brand logos and remove the trade mark. They also tend to lack the one thing which makes a branded item so unique, like the percolator on a ROOR. It’s a good idea to check out photographs on review sites from people who have purchased the real deal to see whether yours matches up or not.
High-quality Vaporizers are made from thick materials, like ceramic or steel, and if they’re made from plastic, they feel thick and heavy. Great vape pens don’t feel cheap and you wouldn’t worry if you put one in your pocket and forgot there was some loose change in there. Low-quality vaporizers, particularly those which are forgeries, don’t give a pure vape and they burn the ingredients rather than heating them. Forgeries also use different colored LEDs, they don’t have as good a range of temperatures, they require you to charge them differently and the mouthpieces always feel strange, like your lips are touching cheese. It’s always a good idea to watch an unboxing video on YouTube to compare your new vaporizer with a genuine one.

How to handle a refund or lodge a complaint

It’s important to note that each online head shop has their own refund policy, which you should always read before buying any item from them. That’s because policies can vary from shop to shop in what products you can and can’t return (for health reasons any used item such as a bong or vaporizer can’t be returned), the length of time you have to return an item (some sites request that if you’re unhappy with an item you have 48 hours to return it, whilst others offer 14 days), and whether you have to pay to cover shipping costs, etc.

So after you’ve read the returns policy and you’re happy with buying your items from this particular online head shop it’s always worth documenting everything that you do. Take a screenshot of the checkout process and keep any e-mail correspondence you get from the company. Once your items have arrived take photographs or a short video of you unboxing the item, so you can prove whether it arrived damaged or not. If it’s not arrived damaged but you aren’t happy with the quality, or if it’s an electrical item that doesn’t seem to work properly, i.e. it won’t charge or it won’t reach a certain temperature, then get online as quickly as you can to start the returns process. If things start slowing down, or you feel that the customer service team aren’t taking your request seriously, you can forward them the documented proof you took to gee them on a bit.

If you’ve been really unlucky and still aren’t getting anywhere with your refund, then you can get in touch with the Better Business Bureau. This organization is a wronged consumer’s best friend, so remember to reach out to them if you feel that you’ve been misled. You can file an online complaint to them even if the company hasn’t registered with them.

Hi,

I’m looking to purchase a glass bong or vaporizer but I’m not really sure what I’m looking for or where to begin. I suffer from rheumatoid arthritis so I find it difficult to grip anything for even a short amount of time, so I’m looking for something which is comfortable to hold, or something I don’t have to hold at all. I’m not a novice to smoking, but I’ve never used a bong or vaporizer before, so is there a product you could recommend for me? I have about $200 to spend. Thanks.

We love Alex’s response. S/He clearly understood Dani’s requirements and addressed them directly, coming up with some brilliant recommendations for water pipe products under Dani’s budget that would help her to medicate easily. The question Alex asks at the end of his/her message is also great because it shows they care. They want to engage Dani to find out more about her needs, and they want to turn the one-dimensional, anonymous e-mail into an actual conversation. Brilliant customer service.

Hello Dani,

I have provided some links below to some items I feel you would be interested in.

I definitely suggest looking into purchasing an electric lighter. We have an electric lighter which is great (I have it at home) which you can use with hempwick to light your product (which I also do with my hempwick at home).

This will definitely help relieve stress in your fingers when lighting any product.

As for pieces, that’s solely up to you now! The main concern is the lighter, since none of our pieces really require a lot of effort using your hands, only to hold. If you’re main concern is size, and you would like something smaller, here are a few pieces I would suggest:

We hope this info helps, but please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any further questions! We’re always happy to help.

We loved Zoe’s response. We loved how you could tell she really wants to help Dani and her reply is full of enthusiasm, with a clear passion for the products they sell. She even weaves in an added layer of trust and expertise into the message as she explains that she uses some of the items herself. The additional information about the lighters was good too as you’ll always need one if you purchase a water pipe. Dani is actually considering purchasing one of the ones Zoe mentioned because lighters are such a painful faff to use. Reminding Dani that she could get back in touch with any further questions was a nice touch, and a way to try and engage with her more. Great service!

What’s their Customer Service like?

On behalf of the Vape.net team, Dani sent the team at Everyone Does It a message through their online chat. This is what it said.

Thanks.

Dani

Let’s be honest here, this isn’t great service, no Siree, not at all. Sam doesn’t advise Dani on anything, s/he just shares a link to two bongs and one vaporizer – which wasn’t actually a link to a vaporizer but to the page of the first bong – and because s/he said “I would say you may go with Bongs”, that’s apparently demonstrating expertise. Err, no it’s not. Sam didn’t even try to engage with Dani, s/he didn’t ask open-ended questions or because it’s a chat, didn’t even make small talk about how her day was going.

Now you may think it’s strange that we’ve listed Everyone Does It in our Top 5 list of great online head shops based on the fact that their customer service is poor. But what we think has happened is we chose the wrong form of communication at the wrong time of day to actually get in touch with anyone with genuine product knowledge. Most people have experienced talking to companies who operate a 24-hour service outside of their normal 9 til 5 operating hours. Our calls or chats are, more often than not, outsourced to other countries, and we think that this is what happened to Dani.

Even though this was disappointing, because we know their products are great, we’ve ordered some items from them before, we’re not giving up on them! We’ll cotinue to investigate and try the other ways of gettinng in touch. We’ll let you know what our findings are.

So there you have it, how to shop safely in an online head shop, and which ones are the best to go to! Good luck and have a great shop! If you’ve got any other questions about how to shop online safely, what to look for in a great vaporizer or would like any recommendations, please get in touch. We’ll respond right away!
